A Song for Sussex
Today, as I took a walk over the Pevensey Levels, I started singing a song in my head. Soon, I began to sing it out loud and, before I knew it, I started making up my own verses to the same tune. It's not anywhere near the simple brilliance of the original, but it just came to me and it expresses what I saw and felt during my walk.
(to be sung to the tune of "Pebble in the Water" by Eve Goldberg from the album _A Kinder Season_)
Pebble in the water / Pebble in the water / Pebble in the water, water
Pebble in the water, water, water / Pebble in the water
Here I am and I'm walking in the tall grass
Here I am and I'm walking in the tall grass
Walking in the tall grass, tall grass
Walking in the tall grass, tall grass, tall grass
Walking in the tall grass
Life is good and the sun is on my shoulders
Life is good and the sun is on my shoulders
The sun is on my shoulders, shoulders
The sun is on my shoulders, shoulders, shoulders
The sun is on my shoulders
The sky is blue and the wind is in my hair
The sky is blue and the wind is in my hair
The wind is in my hair, hair
The wind is in my hair, hair, hair
The wind is in my hair
The trees are green and the birds fly above me
The trees are green and the birds fly above me
The birds fly above me, above me
The birds fly above me, above me, above me
The birds fly above me
I'm full of peace and love is all around me
I'm full of peace and love is all around me
Love is all around me, 'round me
Love is all around me, 'round me, 'round me
Love is all around me, 'round me
(The picture of me is for YOU, Jerome!)
